Short animation made for the Bristol Encounters 0117 Film Challenge 2011 in collaboration with Elin Ahlberg and Julia Mabbett.
Inspired by Bristol’s cranes, ‘Big Jeff’, Cabot Tower and the Suspension bridge.
About 30 hours of entirely manual work.
Music by Ashley Best ‘Slowest Decent’.
Last weekend, two friends and I took part in the Bristol Encounters short movie 0117 challenge. We had 117 hours to produce a 2.30 minutes movie inspired by the brand new Mshed museum.
I’ll upload our video on this blog this weekend, but meanwhile, have a look at these pictures illustrating the making of.
Spring (and summer?) break
So yeah… I haven’t been doing much lately.
Well, I have but nothing related to Balderdash. I’ll come back to this but not in the immediate future. Right now, I have some projects including photography and writing and I will concentrate on these for the coming months.
So now that you don’t have any more reason to spend your time on tumblr, get out and enjoy Spring! x
‘Spring Is Here’, another dinosaur story.
This video is a follow up of ‘Spring is Coming’:vimeo.com/20562890

Beautiful…
‘A wino, resigned and stuck in his ways, finds mysterious sketches on the park bench that he visits every day. As these pictures stir his thoughts, he begins to notice the world around him and to reflect upon his own place within it. He meets a young boy whose innocent encouragement helps to release him from his self destructive social withdrawal and unlocks a part of his character that had been long forgotten.’
It started with a French writing project that I wanted to illustrate with a dinosaur.
4 hours of work + 52 images later + Leon Sommer’s lovely music and it’s now a new tiny animated movie.
And yes, spring is behind the door but is not quite there yet!

So yes.. to be honest… I haven’t done anything for my new video or any video in weeks. I got busy doing plenty of little things that you can see here.
But good news! Today I cut one silhouette and I used my scanner! I made a diplodocus. But sorry, not for a video.
I needed a diplodocus for a French writing project that I am doing with a friend.
But I seriously intend to do some video work in the coming days. Seriously.
Yeah… right…
Getting distracted by my sewing machine…
It’s been now a week that I didn’t do anything for my ‘City’ project and this is why… my sewing machine is fixed and I got myself into making a team of little rabbits!
But well, I said the City video will be done by mid-march and it will be. I promise!
And Balderdash Creations created the zoom..
As I mentioned on Balderdash Creations Facebook fanpage and on this blog earlier, I have started a new video related to a city at night.
It’s so far my most ambitious project and it will probably take me a little while to complete.
By ‘ambitious’, let’s be clear.. it’s ambitious for me. Not for the world of animation.
Ambitious because it will involve to use a whole song, use different angles, innovate in the technique I am using to not end with a nervous breakdown (static electricity is my enemy!! ), involve drawing and painting (quite a personal challenge) and multiple silhouettes required.
In the past few days I worked on the global view of the city at night. And yesterday it was time for me to get into details and have a look at what was happening in some city people’s life.
In order to achieve this I used a …. manual zoom. Frames from various sizes in order to get closer to my targeted window.
Yes indeed I could have use an image editing software to get the same result but for the time being I am really keen to do everything manually as much as I can and to find creative ways to push limits when I find some.
I might certainly be reinventing the wheel but I am enjoying this very much!
